I co-designed ALUSB's Transformative Leadership Course

As a Learning Designer at the ALU School of Business (ALUSB), I co-designed and managed the Leadership Lab, a core course in the pan-African MBA program. Collaborating closely with the Chief Learning Officer, I developed content, built the course on the LMS, and fostered an engaging online learning community for 150+ students across three cohorts.

Customer Success

The problem context

ALUSB offers a pan-African MBA program for professionals and entrepreneurs from over 20 countries, using a hybrid model combining online learning and in-person intensive sessions.

Initially hired in a versatile role, I worked closely with the Chief Learning Officer to build the Leadership Lab course, respond to student requests, and track submissions. Over time, my role evolved into a thought-partner and co-designer, developing content and managing the online learning community..

Here's how we did it...

01

Course Building & Student Support

I copy-edited and built the content drafted by the Chief Learning Officer on the edX platform, incorporating various assets and scheduling assignments. I reviewed student submissions and tracked them on a dashboard, managing both weekly activations and major milestones.

Collaborative Content Development

As my role evolved, I became more involved in the design process, researching topics, providing resources, interviewing leaders, and drafting case studies and assignments, especially for group work sessions involving Home Learning Teams and Pan African Groups.

03

Iterative Improvement

To enhance the experience, we conducted surveys and interviews with students, tracking desired changes in a spreadsheet and incorporating feedback from previous cohorts when building instances for new cohorts.

Outcomes

Here are some of the outcomes

  • Impactful Leadership Course: We built a 5-term, 20-month MBA-level course on leadership that students consistently ranked as one of the most challenging and impactful in the program.

  • Successful Delivery: I built the course in edX and Google Classroom instances, guided discussions on community platforms, and delivereed the experience to 3 cohorts (~150 students) with iterative improvements.

  • Comprehensive Resources: I created an 81-slide deck summarizing core concepts, providing indexed links to readings and resources, and developed video guides for training new hires on content building and community management.

Key Learnings

Here's what we learned

  • Designing for hybrid learning experiences: Working with ALUSB exposed me to digital learning tools and models, expanding my vision of what's possible at the intersection of tech and education.

  • Managing online communities: I discovered the power of connection and community engagement in a hybrid context, creating engaging discussion topics and linking conversations between students to enrich their experience.
